Whether it’s pastoral prints on window valances or a test garment in a fashion house, toile can be many things in the fashion and design industry. Toile gained popularity as a printed French fabric in the late eighteenth century, and the classic aesthetic remains popular today.
History of Toile Designs
The word “toile” comes from the French word for linen cloth. The word is shortened from the full name toile de Jouy, which means linen or cloth from the town of Jouy-en-Josas, in the suburbs of Paris. Toile de Jouy was a specific type of linen printed with romantic, pastoral patterns in a single color—usually black, blue, or red—on an unbleached fabric.
Although the word toile means fabric, the word toile has evolved to also refer to the original design aesthetic of the fabric. Toile designs are popular for non-fabric items like wallpaper and fine china.
Printed toile fabric was originally produced in Ireland in the eighteenth century. The printed textile quickly became popular across France, when the German-born Christophe-Philipe Oberkampf opened a factory in Jouy-en-Josas in 1760. Oberkampf’s factory was one of the first major producers of toile. Even though the printed fabric was originally Irish, the textile became known as toile de Jouy or toile for short, eventually spreading across the rest of Europe.
History informs us that during the American Revolution, both Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson purchased toile fabrics in France for their homes in America.
What’s in the Agave Harvest Toile Pattern?
The Agave Harvest pattern features intricate, hand-drawn illustrations depicting the traditional processes involved in growing and harvesting agave—the raw material for crafting tequila. Each vignette within the design tells a story, from farmers meticulously tending to their crops to idyllic scenes of agave plants flourishing under the sun. These detailed sketches set against a crisp white backdrop enhance the rich ink colors that bring each image to life, creating a stunning visual narrative.
Key motifs include hardworking harvesters in traditional attire, robust agave plants in various stages of growth, and quaint carts pulled by gentle donkeys loaded with their verdant yield. These scenes vividly illustrate the heart and soul of Jalisco’s heritage, emphasizing the artistry and labor that go into producing one of Mexico’s most iconic spirits.
Blue and Grey Variants
Agave Harvest comes in 2 colorways, one a rich blue, close to the indigo color from historic toile designs, and one in grey, which is reminiscent of both ink and pencil drawings.

Our latest material innovation is TPO, the acronym for thermoplastic olefin. TPO wall covering is a blend of different materials comprised of a thermoplastic (such as polypropylene), an elastomer (rubber) and a filler. It is the most significant advancement in wall covering technology in more than 50 years. Environmentally safe, TPO is a PVC-free wall covering free of plasticisers, chlorine, formaldehyde, heavy metals, and halogenated fire retardants. Furthermore, it is printed using only water-based inks and coatings. TPO has unique strength and performance properties and its production requires one third less energy than PVC film. By not using PVC, the potential dangers in manufacturing chlorine-based products are eliminated.
